There were 520,000 readers of the magazine that participated in making Billy Joel the winner. The pine that was killed by the insects was planted in 2004 near L.A.'s Griffith Observatory in honor of the late Beatle, local councilman Tom LaBonge told The Los Angeles Times. In 2013 the tree had grown to be 10 feet tall, but with the onslaught of beetles could not be saved.
