Wayne Watson Woodruff (Woody) will celebrate his 80th birthday with his family. Wayne was born Dec. 28th, 1929 to Harold and Rachel Woodruff in Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Weber County and graduated from Weber High School where he participated in football, baseball, choir, band and orchestra.

One of his proudest moments was when he was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an active member of the LDS Church, he served in various positions. He particularly enjoyed serving as a counselor in the bishopric, the Sunday School Superintendent, young men basketball coach, and as an Aaronic priesthood quorum instructor.

He married Marilyn Kay Johnson on Sept. 20, 1950 in Ogden, Utah; they were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died in March 2005.

He worked at the Ogden Depot from 1948 to 1950. In 1950 he began his career with the Southern Pacific railroad until he was drafted by the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean conflict and was stationed in El Paso, TX and Germany until 1953 when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He then returned to work for the railroad where he worked for 38.5 years retiring in 1987.

He has enjoyed all sports – high school football, church basketball playing in the “All Church” tournament twice, church softball playing in the “All Church” championship game, semi-pro baseball and various basketball, baseball and softball recreational leagues. He enjoys watching BYU football and is a former season ticket holder.

He can often be found supporting his grandchildren in various activities, especially sports. He likes to play golf and continues to play when he can.

He spent many hours playing catch and basketball with his children as well as teaching them how to play other sports. He was always very supportive and spent many hours watching his children participate in sports.

He taught his children how to work and taught his boys that there is no such thing as a “woman’s job”. He helps with everything from changing diapers and washing toilets to working in the yard and repairing automobiles. He has always been the happiest when his children and grandchildren are around.

His seven children are Bob Woodruff, Cathy (Brad) Wilcox, Scott (Jeri) Woodruff, Brad Woodruff (deceased), Brent (Michelle) Woodruff, Craig Woodruff and Cari Dew. He has 26 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren with three more to arrive in 2010.

Over the years dad has made many sacrifices for his children helping them through difficult times and always there to help when needed. He was a wonderful care taker of our mother as her health declined during the last 10 years of her life.

He later met and is now married to Dawn Thornock.
