Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington has reversed statements previously made about the band distancing themselves from images of the Confederate flag. Speaking with CNN, Rossington said the band was beginning to move away from the image, which has long been a part of their live stage backdrop.
After an outpouring of concerns from Southern fans, however, Rossington confirmed that the band will continue to use the Confederate flag:
"I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South . . . We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows . . ." he says.
"I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don't support the flag being used for," he added.
