American Idol Still Wants Elton John
American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe says that Elton John is still his top choice to fill the judge's seat left by the departing Ellen DeGeneres.
In a recent interview with NYMag.com, the producer says that they may have landed the "Rocket Man" star if it wasn't for his busy schedule.
"I must say, I really do love Elton John. He's a huge favorite of mine," Lythgoe said, adding that scheduling conflicts were "always the problem."
Lythgoe continued on to explain that he was also pleased with DeGeneres' judging abilities and that she will surely be missed.
"I'm sorry she's gone, to be honest with you, because I think there's a place for Ellen DeGeneres on American Idol," he said. "And that is being the voice of the people. She wasn't given a fair opportunity to serve that function."
He added, "Ellen was constantly apologizing and overwhelmed, I think, by Simon [Cowell]. There was no chemistry between she and the rest of the panel, but to my mind it wasn't her fault. She was misused. And I'm sorry that turned out to be the case."
Elton fans shouldn't hold their breath for an Idol appearance, however, as reps for the singer have confirmed that he isn't interested in the gig.
