Paul McCartney has released a new single, "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," from the upcoming compilation, Holidays Rule.
"It's simple but affecting, with tinkling piano that intertwines with McCartney's caressing vocals on a welcoming version of the holiday classic," said Rolling Stone magazine in its review of the track.
Christmas Rules features a host of top name stars re-doing X-mas classics including Rufus Wainwright ("Baby, It's Cold Outside"), Irma Thomas ("May Everyday Be Christmas"), Andrew Bird ("Auld Lang Syne"), Calexico ("Green Grows the Holly"), Holly Golightly ("That's What I Want for Christmas"), the Punch Brothers ("O Come, O Come, Emmanuel") and the Fiery Furnaces' Eleanor Friedberger ("Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me").
"I love holiday music," co-producer Sara Matarazzo said in a statement, "but every year I find myself going back to the standards. I wondered, where's the holiday record for this generation?" A question the release of Christmas Rules will presumably answer.
