A letter written by John Lennon and addressed to Eric Clapton is expected to fetch as much as $30,000 when it's sold at auction next month.
The letter, dated September 29, 1971, in part reads, "Eric, I know I can bring out something great, in fact greater in you that had been so far evident in your music. I hope to bring out the same kind of greatness in all of us, which I know will happen if/when we get together."
According to auctioneer Joe Maddalena, Clapton had nearly become a member of the Beatles.
"There was a point in time when George Harrison thought about leaving the band and his replacement was Clapton, so this letter is a link of what could have been."
The letter will go under the hammer on December 18 in Los Angeles, at an auction dubbed "Profiles in History."
