Elton John made waves with his performance in Beijing, China last night when he dedicated his performance to Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei. Sir Elton announced the dedication before the show, causing a visible ripple of surprise amongst fans, reports Rolling Stone.
Ai is known for his sculpture and his outspoken opposition to human rights violations in China. He was imprisoned by the Chinese government for three months last year and is now banned from leaving the country.
According to reports from the magazine, Ai and John met before the show and took photographs together. During his performance John praised Weiwei, saying that the show was dedicated to the "spirit and talent" of the controversial figure.
