David Bowie's The Next Day Artwork Explained
Jonathan Barnbrook, the designer behind the packaging for David Bowie's upcoming album, The Next Day, explained, via his own VirusFonts website, the unusual image adorning the cover.
The front of the album features, in the background, the cover of Bowie's 1977 album Heroes. The title, however, is scratched out. Placed somewhat recklessly over the background image is a white box, in which is written, in a plain black font, The Next Day.
"The Heroes cover obscured by the white square is about the spirit of great pop or rock music which is 'of the moment', forgetting or obliterating the past," Barnbrook said, stumbling his way through an explanation.
"However, we all know that this is never quite the case, no matter how much we try, we cannot break free from the past."
The Next Day is due March 12.
