Jefferson Airplane drummer Joey Covington was killed in a car accident on Wednesday at the age of 67. According to Rolling Stone, Covington was driving in Palm Springs, California when he hit a wall on the side of the road.
Local news sources report that Covington was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck and was pronounced dead when first responders appeared on the scene. Traffic was closed in both directions for several hours following the accident.
In addition to his work with Jefferson Airplane, Covington helped found the group Hot Tuna. He came together in that group with Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner in 1969 as they awaited Grace Slick's recovery from surgery.
