Mike Campbell, guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, posted a lengthy tribute to J.J. Cale, the guitarist-songwriter who died of a heart attack last week.
On Petty's official site, Campbell wrote that "losing JJ Cale is losing an American musical treasure."
"Whenever I listen to music, it is nearly always one of his records," Campbell said. "He had a gift for the sweetest groove, the sweetest guitar phrase, and the coolest lyrics - understated, but deep."
He added: "His guitar tone and touch were magical in their simplicity. I will miss him terribly, but I cherish all the music he left for us."
At last year's New Orleans Jazz Fest, Petty and his band covered Cale's track "Travelin' Light." Others to cover Cale written tracks include Eric Clapton, Waylon Jennings and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
