Rod Stewart has released a two disc set called Rarities, featuring alternative cuts from his extensive catalog. Among the songs is a version of "Maggie May," which Stewart laid down during a performance on BBC Radio One.
Rolling Stone magazine says the previously unreleased version is more intense than the mid tempo original:
"Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood translates the song's famous mandolin break into a ragged guitar line on a blistering performance as the distorted guitars and Stewart's gravelly wail crash around the studio space."
Other tracks on the set include Stewart's versions of "Pinball Wizard" (the Who) and "Girl from the North Country" (Bob Dylan), along with non LP singles, b-sides and studio outtakes.
"Maggie May" was originally released on the 1971 album Every Picture Tells a Story.
