The Cavern Club, the Liverpool venue where the Beatles performed nearly 300 times in their early days, is hitting the auction block.
According to NME, the owner of the Mathew Street building and the adjacent Cavern Walks Shopping Centre, filed for bankruptcy last month and must sell the properties. Britain's The Times reports the club is expected to fetch around $1.5 million.
In addition to the Beatles, the club hosted the Rolling Stones, the Who and Elton John. In 1999, Paul McCartney returned to the club to close out his Run Devil Run tour.
The original building was demolished in the 1970s, but the venue eventually reopened after it was rebuilt using bricks saved from the site. The rebuilt club re-opened in 1984.
