Sasha Baron Cohen was too recognizable to take on the role of Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic of the late singer, says Queen guitarist Brian May.
"It seemed like a good idea in the beginning but the truth is, he's too recognizable," May told The Guardian. "He's very much a style and a character. I think that he would have been very distracting. That's the conclusion we came to."
Drummer Roger Taylor also thought Cohen was a bad fit, telling the same news source last month that the actor was dismissed because the band did not want the film to be "a joke."
May and Taylor were speaking in the wake of suggestions on Hollywood trade websites that Cohen left the project because Queen wanted "a sanitized take on Mercury's life."
