According to a poll taken by BBC History magazine, David Bowie is the best dressed Briton in history. The Thin White Duke had to beat out some stiff competition for the honor, including Elizabeth I, Henry III and George "Beau" Brummell.
Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, who voted for Bowie in the poll, told NME that his look was inspirational:
"Here was a creative genius who understood art and design, looked cool, inspired us and upset the establishment. All these attributes lead to things that drive humankind forward . . . change."
Bowie took home nearly half of the vote (48.5%) with Elizabeth I, who came in second place, getting just 13.6%.
"Bowie had to overcome a king, two queens and a political heavyweight to triumph in our poll, and in doing so has struck a blow for 20th and 21st-century fashions," said the mag's editor, Rob Attar.
