Gypie Mayo, the former guitarist for the Yardbirds and Dr. Feelgood, has passed away at the age of 62. Mayo replaced Wilko Johnson in Dr. F from 1977 to 1981 before going on to work with the Birds from 1996 to 2004.
Johnson hit his Facebook page on Wednesday to commemorate the passing: "Very sad to hear Gypie Mayo passed away this morning..RIP Gypie."
Mayo, born John Phillip Cawthra, got started in the music biz in 1969 with the band White Mule. He went through several bands before settling in with Dr. Feelgood in 1977.
Speaking with the Bath Chronicle, Feelgood drummer Kevin Morris said Mayo suffered from an extended illness.
"He had been ill for some time but when I last spoke to him retained his great sense of humour," Morris said.
His cause of death has not been revealed.
