Velvet Underground's Lou Reed Dies

Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed has passed away. He was 71 years old.

A cause of death has not yet been released, although the rock legend had suffered from health problems recently. He received a liver transplant earlier this year.

Reed founded the influential Velvet Underground with John Cale in New York City during the 1960s. While it never sold a substantial number of albums, the group, known in part for its ties to famed artist Andy Warhol, became an important inspiration for future acts.

The Underground is respected for its gritty sound and its willingness to take on taboo subjects, with classics like "Sweet Jane" and "Heroin."

Reed also had a successful solo career, including the hit "Walk On The Wild Side."
