Both Pattie Smith and David Byrne have offered up their own tributes to the late Lou Reed. Smith penned her tribute to the Velvet Underground rocker in the New Yorker, while Byrne's tribute appeared in Rolling Stone.
"I searched for the significance of the date - October 27th - and found it to be the birthday of both Dylan Thomas and Sylvia Plath," Smith began. "Lou had chosen the perfect day to set sail - the day of poets, on Sunday morning, the world behind him."
Byrne recalled meeting Reed in his New York apartment in the Talking Heads early days:
"Lou was talking a mile a minute and going through tubs of Haagen-Dazs ice cream while he suggested some variations and adjustments we might make to some of our songs. He began to play our song 'Tentative Decisions' (a very Lou song title, no?) but he played it way slower than we were doing it. He was showing us how the song might be as a ballad."
