Bruce Springsteen Honors Pete Seeger In South Africa

Bruce Springsteen paid tribute to folk singer Pete Seeger, a close friend and inspiration to him, who passed away earlier this week.

"I lost a great friend and a great hero last night, Pete Seeger . . . He was a courageous freedom fighter," Springsteen told the crowd on Tuesday at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town, South Africa.

Back in 2006, Springsteen recorded an album of Seeger songs called We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.

On Tuesday night, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed Seeger's civil rights anthem, "We Shall Overcome," which he also dedicated to recently deceased South African leader Nelson Mandela. Springsteen said of the song: "I took this song to heart and once you heard this song you were prepared to march into hell's fire."

Seeger died Monday night at the age of 94.
