Debbie Harry and Blondie have passed on a five-figure offer to perform at the Olympic Games' Red Rocks Festival due to the anti-gay stance of this year's host country, Russia. Harry shared an image of the rejected contract sent to the band via Twitter.
In the image, the band's contract proposal was written over in black marker with the words "PASS" and "HUMAN RIGHTS."
She later issued a statement to the Huffington Post on the band's rejection of the performance slot:
"Blondie has always been a part of the downtown community in NYC, with many, many friends who represent alternative lifestyles. We feel very strongly about these friendships and associations, and don't feel good about participating in a situation where biases and prejudices are paramount."
Had they accepted the position, the band would have played before 45,000 fans at the main medals plaza in Sochi on Thursday.
