Billy Joel made a surprise visit to Finley Middle School's Wunsch Art Center in Glen Cove, N.Y., for Deasy Elementary School's spring concert, called "The River of Dreams: A Billy Joel Tribute."
"We invited Billy Joel on a lark, but we didn't expect him to come," Deasy's principal, Nomi Rosen, told Newsday. "It was totally thrilling. We were all beside ourselves. I asked him if he wanted to sit in front, but he said he would rather stay in the back so he wouldn't make the kids nervous."
Joel reportedly drove his motorcycle ten minutes from Centre Island, N.Y. to catch the show. He sat casually in the crowd taking in the performance, and left early.
"I found out two minutes before the concert started that he was here and it totally freaked me out," said Rosita Mallo, concert director and music teacher. "My nerves went sky-high. This was a very welcomed surprise. It gave the kids extra energy to perform."
